Empathy
If we get it right with education, we get it right with everything. When I hear of corruption, impunity, massacre, looting etc., I stop to wonder how the perpetrators of these misdeeds escaped proper education that enshrined basic values of humanity, especially empathy.
Right education is the only solution to the ills in our society. As teachers and parents, can we start by intentionally inculcating the value of empathy in our students? Empathy makes you feel what the next person feels. It writes the Golden Rule on the tablet of your heart. It makes you human!
Hence, a child that is empathetic will think of how his action will affect the next person and use his own feeling to judge if it’s right or wrong. Whatever a child then grows to become in future, trust, his action will be influenced by how-will-I-feel-if-it's-done-to-me thought.
It’s time we consciously raised human beings in our classes and homes. That is the only way we can have a just and egalitarian society.
